Reading breakfast in the museum
Great start to the National Reading Days!
Childcare 2Samen starts the National Reading Days off well with a visit to the Literature Museum/Children's Book Museum. Here the children walk from location 2Prinsjes with wide eyes, they enter the colorful Annie MG Schmidt hall, where they are read out by Mei Li Vos, member of the First Chamber faction of GroenLinks-PvdA and vice-chairman of the First Chamber.
Rinus
This year's picture book is Rinus by Ingrid and Dieter Schubert. This little rhino wants to play with his strong and tough grandpa, but grandpa is dozing in the shade. He has no intention of getting up, what should the little rhino do now?
As the children look up, the book opens and the story of rhino Rinus comes to life, the children's faces speak volumes. Here we clearly see what reading aloud can mean.
The book is central to language development
“We have many children at our location who are raised multilingually” says Zorida, Educational Assistant at 2Prinsjes. “For these children, reading is very important in their language development. That is why we sit in a circle every day at 10.00:XNUMX, where we read to the children and sing together.”
Just like in the Children's Book Museum, the Educational Staff of 2Prinsjes the books to life. They have three-week theme blocks, in which they choose books that fit the theme. "For example, we make an igloo with sheets when we read about the little polar bear. I also like to introduce the children to concepts such as snow and ice. For example, we take a cup of water and have them describe what it looks and feels like. Then we put the cup in the freezer, we wait until the water has turned into ice and ask the children where the water has gone. How does the ice feel? In this way you see that the concepts from the books are given meaning.”
For these children, reading is very important in their language development. We therefore sit in a circle every day at 10.00:XNUMX, where we read to the children and sing together.
A moment of attention
During the National Reading Days, the benefits of reading aloud are emphasized. For example, reading aloud stimulates language skills, increases vocabulary and helps to strengthen empathy. Moreover, reading aloud provides a moment of peace and at the same time stimulates the imagination. All the more reason to keep reading!
Mei Li Vos also emphasizes the benefits of reading aloud. In addition to being a member of the First Chamber faction of GroenLinks-PvdA and vice-chair of the First Chamber, she is a lateral entrant in education. She teaches a group 3 in Amsterdam-West three days a week, where she makes a lot of room for reading and reading aloud.
“I really see reading aloud as a moment of attention, a way to connect with each other.” says Mei Li Vos. “When people want to do volunteer work, I often say, ‘Go read to someone for an hour a week.’ When you sit down with a book, the children will automatically come to you. Older children enjoy reading together or even reading to you. You often see younger children pointing to the pictures, which immediately shows their language development. For these children, the pictures make it possible to interpret the story or specific words.”

The Literature Museum/Children's Book Museum always organizes a Reading Breakfast as the starting signal for the National Reading Days.
